Powder Metallurgy Superalloys

Powder metallurgy superalloys represent a new‑generation superalloy that emerged in the 1960s. Using metal powder as raw material, they are manufactured via subsequent hot working processes to deliver high tensile strength and excellent fatigue resistance.

Powder metallurgy superalloys can meet the service requirements of engines operating under high‑stress conditions. They are the preferred material for high‑temperature components of high thrust‑to‑weight ratio engines, such as turbine disks, compressor disks and turbine baffles. With the rapid development of the aviation industry, both performance requirements and market demand for powder metallurgy superalloys keep rising. Globally, the research and development of powder metallurgy superalloys has now entered the fourth generation.

Research on powder metallurgy superalloys in China started relatively late, dating back to the late 1970s. Gaona of CISRI was the first domestic institution to develop powder‑metallurgy superalloy products. Other participants include the University of Science and Technology Beijing and the AVIC Materials Research Institute. The major domestic grades include FGH95, FGH96, FGH97 and FGH98.
